Bad Housekeeping! Magazine Cover

I found this online and loved how it challenged the norm for moms!  I chose to use a picture of my happy kids to show them getting love and attention and us sharing a bonding moment instead of me being stressed out about cleaning!  I struggle with a lot of guilt as a mom- that I don't spend enough time with my kids, that I don't get them in enough activities, that my house isn't clean enough, etc.  I thought this was a great cover to go against the pressure of the media.

The magazine cover has an exclamation, "Don't Toss That!".  There is also the interrogative, "Under & Behind Your Couch: How much can you hide there?".   There is also the ellipse, "Re-Using Dirty  Laundry" with examples to follow.  Lastly, there is the teaser about, "Discovering the health benefits of shower mildew".

A good persuasion technique is the picture of happy children loving each other on the cover.  I could have used a picture of a big mess in my house but that would not show the potentially good side of taking a break from housekeeping.  There is also the humor I know many mom friends of mine would appreciate.  I like the simple use of several media language techniques (as mentioned above) in a variety of colors without crowding the page much.

Overall, I am glad I was able to quickly create this hilarious magazine cover through fototrix.com.  I think it does what good advertising that works is supposed to do by creating a positive feeling from the consumer and it definitely challenges the mainstream portrayal of what it is like to be a woman in today's society!

  1. This magazine cover uses the technique of relating to real life scenarios. Putting kids on a cover is a great way to draw moms and other family members in to read it.

  2. I think you are right about these unrealistic expectations that society has for not just mothers but parents in general. I know that right now working full time, carrying 9 hours of masters classes, and having two children under the age of 5 is tough. I feel the same that some things can be let go for a while, but my wife struggles to keep up with it all. I think your techniques were well executed and it was a great picture showing some very obvious happy children.

  3. Macy,

I truly enjoyed your magazine cover! It caught my eye from the moment I clicked on your blog, which is a good sign! Your cover strongly challenged the mainstream media. Even your title screams a challenge. “Bad Housekeeping,” I love it! Your headlines and your subheadings stand out and made me shake my head and smile thinking, “She is brave and so right!” Wonderful creation and I would love to read this whole entire magazine!

  4. I enjoyed your cover picture; however, it was a little hard to read. However, I enjoyed the thoughts that you put behind this! I think that it shows just how much you have on your plate, but you can go through with it. This shows just how strong women are!

  5. I can see that you are definitely a mother and that this would fall into the mainstream media's gender stereotype towards females with children. I liked the liners, but I could barely read them.

  6. Good design, and great title for the magazine. I sometimes listen to a podcast about parenting called "One Bad Mother" which attempts to do a similar thing to your title "Bad Housekeeping." The "reusing dirty laundry" teaser is great, and it bucks the everyday pressure to compete with other moms for housekeeping skills. I'd read it.

  7. I love the gender role that you are fighting here! However, it is a little hard to read. The points you brought up are interesting though! I think these are the kinds of things that are almost taboo to talk about in public because your house is "supposed to be spotless". I am one that actually lives in my home and I'm glad you are also not ashamed of living! Your cover shows that there are more important things in life than cleaning.

  8. Great magazine cover because it focuses on things that happen in every household but no one really talks about it. I do the nose test on if my laundry is behind schedule, I have found things thought missing for years behind furniture and my shower can get funky if I ignore it. Good techniques and challenges to gender roles.
