On April 24, 2013 a garment and apparel factory in Bangladesh used by American companies such as Wal-Mart and Gap collapsed killing 1,129 workers. In November of 2012 another Bangladesh garnet factory fire killed 112 people (O'Donnell, 2013). On September 12, 2013 a dozen retailers and clothing brands met in Geneva to discuss providing compensation to the victims and Wal-Mart did not attend (Reuters, 2013).
In the original Wal-Mart advertisement, Wal-Mart uses repetition to convey its message, "always". In my counter advertisement, I used repetition, "no matter", and also added in rhyme, "Cost" and "Lost" to make the message more memorable. I tried to keep it simple to mimic the original advertisement. I think it will be a memorable advertisement for me which will make it more difficult for me to continue to shop at Wal-Mart.

Your counter ad is great. I love that you also showed us another picture showing what you really mean when you say no matter how many lives lost.
ReplyDeleteI thought about using Walmart for my ads as well. They tend to be an easy target with all the issues that they have with customer relations, employee pay, quality of goods and just in general the reputaion of shutting down smaller business who cannot compete with them. I think you made small changes but it definitely had the impact when added with the images of the factory workers. Nice job.
ReplyDeleteI did not know this hidden story about wal-mart. I have heard from employees that it is not the best place to work at, but this is a little too much.
ReplyDeleteI knew that Wal-Mart did other horrible things like not hiring full time so they won't have to pay for benefits, however, I didn't know about this terrifying story. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI have heard of many bad business practices of Walmart so they are a good topic for a counter ad
